  41. Has anyone out there built a TNC from the TAPR-2 circuit board? If so, I'd be  
  42. interested in hearing about it. Specifically, how difficult was it to locate  
  43. parts, was it any cheaper than buying a used 1270 or other clone, any problems  
  44. getting it to work?

  46. I'm looking for a (relatively) cheap entry into the 9600bps packet world and  
  47. building a TAPR TNC and adding the 9600 modem seems like one way to do it.

  127. I have a FT890AT and love the rig. It is versitile, the receiver is 
  128. extremely sensitive, and the tuner will tune a bathtub! I highly 
  129. reccomend this rig. Call me 603-485-5852 8am to noon EST if you want to

  192. The service manual does indicate that the peak-deviation adjustment is set
  193. for 3.5 KHz.  Mine came set to 3.5.  I found that with CTCS turned on,
  194. deviation was slightly higher, so I set it for 5.0 KHz with tone on.  This
  195. turned out to be about 4.5 KHz with tone off.
  196.  
  197. The difference between 3.5 and 4.5 or 5.0 KHz is only about 3 dB, which is
  198. barely noticeable on the air.  Therefore, the real problem isn't peak
  199. deviation, it is microphone gain.  Since there is no separate adjustment,
  200. all you can do is speak close to the microphone and don't mumble.
  201.  
  202. With mine, I found that speaking close to the microphone made it work well.
  203.  I think many people want to be able to speak in a quiet voice, with the
  204. radio a foot away.  If you insist on operating that way, you will always be
  205. cursed with either low audio, or with high background noise!
  206.  
  207. Adjustments for CTCS and DTMF tone levels are each independent of the voice
  208. level adjustment.  This is necessary for the CTCS, since the tone must be
  209. injected after the voice limiter circuit.
  210.  
  211. My DTMF levels were in agreement with the service manual, although I forget
  212. what they were.  The real problem with the HTX-202's DTMF signal, is the
  213. fact that the high tone and low tone of each tone pair, are at the same
  214. level.  Telephone company standards require that the high group of tones be
  215. at a higher level than the low frequency group.  (I think the required
  216. difference is 6 dB.)
  217.  
  218. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only REAL bug with the radio.  I
  219. haven't seen it, but I understand there is a Radio Shack service bulletin
  220. on adjusting the DTMF level.  It reportedly states that you should "adjust
  221. it until it works"!  Obviously, there have been complaints about problems
  222. with autopatch.

  233. I seem to remember hearing that Icom is coming out with an upgraded version
  234. of the 737, which I think is called the 737A.  They addressed some of the
  235. shortcomings of the 737, like lack of VOX and maybe RF gain control and 
  236. AGC defeat.

  238. Does anyone have any information on that?  In particular, I'm wondering if
  239. they will be offereing a retrofit change so that owners of 737's can get
  240. the new features.
